Press Release: The River, Lakes & Coorong Action Group Wants to See More Science

Minister Karlene Maywald and Alexandrina Council Mayor Kym McHugh in their press releases of 19 February express concern regarding the imminent risk of acidification in the Goolwa Channel, Finniss River and Currency Creek. Both look to temporary barriers as solutions. Both cite scientific evidence is support of their claims. Both consider that this action is justified by scientific evidence.

Workshop

28th February, 2009, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Payneham Community Centre, 374 Payneham Road, Payneham - Everyone has a story about the River.

Leane:  “I grew up on the Murray and love it. But it will disappear. The experience will disappear. No one will ever experience the Murray in the future if we don’t act now.”

Lois: “I need to see both sides of the argument. I want information before I go and carrying placards in the streets.”

Kevin: “Water engineers have known what needs to be done to fix these issues for 40 years - but the government and the community still hasn’t done anything about it.”

Andrew: “The government ignores the advice of scientists and they think they can do what ever they like - which has nothing to do with reality”

Katherine: “I run 1 of the 30 dairy farms left in the region. There were 130 dairy farmers in the region. I’m concerned about the animals, birds, bats and frogs all dying. Sometimes I have felt like we were the only ones that were concerned. I want my grandchildren to have the Murray.”

Darren: “As a Geography teacher I can see this is a national issue. The Murray is Australia’s river.”

Marie: “I was born overlooking Lake Bonney. And that is now gone. But if we loose the River Murray – what is going to happen to Australia? We need access to scientific information.”

Lynton: “The Murray is a predominantly fresh water system. Victor Gostyn (popular guest geologist) on 891, with Matt and Dave, Feb 26, is convinced that the Lakes did not have any sea-water for the last few thousand years, and said emphatically that a “sea-water” rescue would be the worst possible action to take.

Ruth: “What is the long term solution? Alexandrina Council has lots of data. Local Council is convinced it is worth the fight. They know that if the river dies they die.”

Donella: “ We need people in Adelaide city to see how bad the government proposal is.”

Ann Jenkin: “We feel powerless.  Is NSW to blame? What can we do? This is a national issue.”

Benita: “It is up to the people to do something about it. This is the responsibility of the nation.”

Evan: “It is not the drought that is the problem. It is over-allocation.”

Ben: “Big business, green lawns and long showers are destroying South Australia.”

Diane: “The water is there. The money is available. What we need is the political will to get it here in time to stop irreversible damage.”
