It is raining. The foreshores are greening up nicely. The rivers have not turned to acid. Lake Alexandrina is alkaline. Now, it seems Water Security Minsiter Karlene Maywald is catching up with us. Revised government modelling shows that the danger date for Lake Alexandrina is now December 2010 not February 2010. The construction of the weirs (”Regulators”) on the Finniss River, Currency Creek and at Clayton Bay is at least a week behind schedule. Not good in an 8 week timetable and it is still raining.
The hard work of the RLCAG is paying off as Adelaide residents come to recognise that a weir at Wellington is not in their interests. The poll in the Advertiser has 70% against a weir. Democrat David Winderlich has called for an independent study into whether the weir water would be drinkable. Read on “Weirs poison not panacea.”
And independent experts are speaking out: Fresh Water ecologist Associate Professor Keith Walker has sounded a warning on the weir. “The water behind the weir will be largely still, stagnant (in summer and autumn) and, with sunlight and high nutrient concentration, the risk of algal blooms is real.” Read on “Weirs poison not panacea.”
It is not too late Minister Maywald. You could stop the construction of the weirs “Regulators” at Clayton Bay and on the Finnis River and Curency Creek now.
