A coolish morning for an early walk from Goolwa to the Murray Mouth. Diane Bell and Pauline Gibbs were rewarded by the sounds of the land awakening as we crossed the dunes and a spectacular sunrise once we reached the beach.
Each week it is different. Throughout January, the bird life at the Murray Mouth was intense: pelicans were particularly plentiful. Today we saw one pelican in the distance and a gathering on the east side of the Murray Mouth. The water is still rushing out the Mouth but the birds were not fishing. Four wheel drive vehicles rush along the beach while a tortoise wends her way to the water. The waves were full of muddy sand and the high water mark slimy to the touch. Fishing campers, dogs and a lone fishermen hope for a feed. By the time we crossed to dunes back to Goolwa, the flies were awake and the sun hot.
